June 26th, 1975

That spring like morning
when hell broke loose
on Pine Ridge Reservation
the women were baking the bread that
soon should become covered with dust.

Bread that slipped from their hands
before it could ever be eaten
by their loved ones.

Shots were heard. Children and women
fled into the hills.
Men grabbed their guns. Indians.
Again they would be deprived
of freedom and land.

Covered with sand
the breads laid away,
empty
the tents remained.
